Name : Mr Ng Chea Hwei

    Age : 26
Youth Group : Funkie Monkies Productions Pte Ltd
Occupation : Artiste & Songwriter of Funkie Monkies Productions Pte Ltd
Nominator : Shirley Chan Wai Nah

    1) What were the unconventional situations or contradictory circumstances you had faced? I was the small town boy in Penang just doing songwriting, and it never occurred to me to be the face of my own music.
I was fortunate enough to be signed to a good publishing company Musset, which helped me gain exposure in the Taiwanese music market through the sales of my compositions, and that gave me the privilege of meeting renowned and established songwriters such as Jonathan Lee. A twist of fate led to my discovery by my now mentor and benefactor, Eric Ng, who brought me over to Singapore to develop my talent because he felt I was a rough gem that could be polished to shine.
This was all thanks to being cursed, though now more blessed, with a “girl’s” voice, which was the voice that attracted Eric’s attention. It certainly was not an easy choice coming here to pursue my dreams.
It was a 180 degree change in lifestyle and mindset, while I constantly feared not knowing what to expect, or whether if this new career path would work out. Coming from a single parent family, my mother was not very supportive of my ambitions because she feared I would forsake my studies midway as she had hoped for me to be a professional.
Besides that, music is generally an unconventional career choice with no guarantee of success.
As it involved me going away for a long period of time, it became a very tough choice to choose between my career and my loved ones of family and friends. 2) How did you overcome the challenges and difficulties? The only time I really feel alive is when I play my guitar and sing.
It is the love for music, relentless determination and perseverance that kept me going. Along the way, I found support in friends who share a similar undying love and passion for music.
As for my mother, she was initially forced to be supportive due to the circumstances.
Upon seeing how much I have achieved, I have become her pride and joy, allowing her to fully support me without worries. 3) What was some of the obstacles and stigmas faced in trying to overcome the challenges and difficulties? One of the obstacles was to support myself.
Coming to Singapore with only my guitar and two bags, I did gigs in pubs while being an apprentice to Eric.
It was the typical lifestyle of a poor struggling musician, eating only cup noodles everyday and living in a storeroom. It got tough when loneliness set in and it felt like no one was around.
I started to doubt myself on my choice, and although I still loved music, I lacked the confidence. Another was the lack of creative inspiration in songwriting, although that was not unusual.
A break of a movie treat and a nice meal easily sorted that out.
Generally, it took me a long time to get used to the life here. 4) Who has helped and encouraged you along the way? My mentors Eric Ng and Xiaohan, Monica from Warner Music Publishing, Jonathan Lee, Al Guan, fellow Indie singer songwriter Debbie Hsu, everyone in Funkie Monkies, family, friends, and of course, my fans. 5) Which people, groups or communities have benefited from your activity? As much as I can, I try to contribute back to society, such as helping the less fortunate or victims of unfortunate circumstances. I do this through performances and appearances on various charity shows and events, like the Thye Hwa Kwan and Sichuan Earthquake charity show.
Recently, I went for a charity event organised by the Habitat Humanity for Singapore, whereby I helped to build houses using paper bricks to raise funds in aid of the Sichuan earthquake victims. On another note, I hope that I have brought joy to people with my music.
For which I was glad that people from ages two to sixty, liked the song “One Half” which I sang for the local hit movie <881>. 6) What changes or benefits to the community did you hope to achieve through your experience? I hope to contribute back to the community with active participation in charity work; be it through fundraising, or simply reaching out to the less fortunate. One way I would like to do this would be by bringing happiness to people by sharing my music and love of it through good entertainment.
However, I also hope that in sharing my personal experience and music, it would somehow help others through their predicaments. Finally, I hope to be a good influence and inspiration to the younger generation by showing that there is more to life than things like smoking and drugs, and that good clean fun is actually possible.
While dreams do come true if you work hard for it, and persevere even when you meet up with failures, especially to aspiring musicians.

    do vote for WJH! :D
